Content is Dead, Community is King Now

I can hardly bring myself to say the old cliche about content being... well, you know. I think it's one of the original cliche's in the SEO industry. And as redundant as it has become, for whatever reason we keep hearing it over and over again. And every now and then a new study pops up seemingly proving, once again, that content is... uh, good.

But much like a TV producer suggesting "video is king" or a radio advertiser demanding that "audio is king", so goes the SEO demanding the same about content. Content has its role--and an important one at that, but it's not the be-all, end-all of online marketing. Not even close.

But the roots of the "content is" movement are important for our industry. The mantra was first heard in the early days of the search engine optimization industry when SEOs were doing nothing more than throwing a bunch of keywords on a page and hoping they ranked well. Little or no thought or consideration was given to the readability of the web page. After all, it's only rankings that matter, right? But those of us who learned to game search engines slowly began to learn something that those in the marketing industry have known for years. Words sell. Or turn people off, depending on what's written and how it's written.

So the movement to developing good content--real content--was an important one for our industry. But to get there we had to have the content mantra beat into our head over and over (and over). We got it. We know.

The King is Losing His Grip on the Kingdom
But like any worthy cause, we've reached a point where the mantra has been used and abused to the point where we use whatever we can find to prove once again that content is... y'know, that. Take a recent study by OPA and Nielsen/ NetRatings that shows that Internet users are spending more time than ever on content based websites.

Share of Time Spent Online

Commerce: 13.8%
Communications: 32.0%
Content: 49.6%
Search: 4.5%

That seems to confirm what many have been saying for years. Content is... uh, great for web marketing. And I've seen a few posts around the blogosphere and forums using this data to make that connection. The problem is, it's not really there.

With the rise in popularity of blogs and social media sites it's no wonder that more people spend their time reading online than anything else. While time reading and gathering information online has increased, time spent shopping has actually decreased, down over 2% from a year before. But does that tell us anything about marketing online? No, not really.

We know people like information and we know they like to communicate. We also know people like to shop and online shopping has continued to íncrease year over year. All this study suggests is what we spend most of our time doing on the web. Well, true enough, I don't spend most of my time shopping.

Since when is it the goal of ecommerce sites to get people to spend a long time on their site? Isn't it more important to drive shoppers to the sale and get the conversion? Step 1: Get traffíc. Step 2: Keep visitors engaged. Step 3: Close the sale. That's not necessarily a process that necessitates long periods of time spent on a site.

In no way do I want to diminish the importance of content on ecommerce websites. Having a database of information that helps visitors make their decision, helpful tutorials, etc. can improve your visitor's overall experience and keep them coming back to your site. But the goal of all of that is to lead people to the sale.

Community Killed Content and Stole the Throne
If I were to interpret this data I wouldn't necessarily come away thinking content is... so very important. What I would conclude, however is that we need to build websites that meet a number of users needs. Adding more content to your ecommerce site is not the magic bullet. What is, however, is creating a great user experience and providing just the right amount of information and customer engagement that shoppers need to get to the conversion goal. That can be done through a number of means.

Many online stores are already paving the way by opening the door to ratings and reviews. Others are doing that by creating blogs to disseminate important and relevant industry information along with tips and tutorials. Still others do that by creating an information database that can visitors frequent to gain additional insights.

I might suggest that the best ecommerce websites are not those that build content around their products but build a community around the product interest. By creating a place where shoppers can come and gain information, learn more about the products and discuss or share information with others and then make purchases as well, will do more for sales than simply creating a shopping website.

By building a community you not only sell more products but you build brand recognition and customer loyalty. And both of those are worth far more than a single one-off sell. So while content may not be dead (not by a long shot, really), there is a new king in the online marketing industry. Long live community. Long live the (new) king.

Why you should care about Google Android

Why you should care about Google Android
Is there such a thing as a Google phone, or "Gphone", yet?
No. Google has announced an industry group, the Open Handset Alliance, which promises to produce phones by the second half of next year — and promises, furthermore, that they will be exciting in ways that have yet to be announced.

The phones will use a free Linux operating system from Google subsidiary Android, which is producing a free software-development kit for phone makers and application developers, released under the Apache v2 licence. A "first look" at the SDK will be released on 12 November.

Will there ever be a Gphone ?
Google won't say, and the answer depends on the conditions handset makers and operators agree to. The world of phones is undergoing a branding crisis: operators such as O2 and Vodafone want their name on the phones, and so do most handset manufacturers, such as Nokia, Sony Ericsson and now Apple.

If all goes according to plan, there will be lots of phones based on the Open Handset Alliance, running Google-based services. Handset maker HTC, previously wedded to Microsoft's Windows Mobile, has promised to deliver Android phones.

But however much people love Google, it's not clear whether they want a Google-branded phone.

What will Android phones do ?
It is all speculation. Spokespeople have talked of "innovations we can't even envisage yet" — which translates as "we don't know".

We can say that they will have a good browser, one that people will actually want to use. There won't be any point launching the phones otherwise. They'll support services that, like most projected "killer-apps" for mobile internet, will be location-based and identity-based. Essentially, Google's targeted adverts beamed to you and relevant to where you are.

Oh, and there will definitely be Android devices with touchscreens. Since the iPhone, everything has to have a touchscreen, we understand.

Will the phones be open ?
Again, this is not clear. The software will be open source, and will provide a platform (probably several, including Java and web browser) for operators to develop applications on.

But that does not require the handset maker or the operator to deliver an "unlocked" phone that lets the user choose applications (and possibly operators). Operators may want to lock these phones into specific services, just as they do with phones such as the iPhone, and there's nothing to stop such contracts emerging.

So why is Google doing this then ?
Advertising revenue. There are projections of billions of dollars of advertising revenue from the mobile internet. Google wants to hoover up as much of that as it can, just as it already does with internet advertising accessed over fixed links. It already has some deals, for instance to put Google Maps on Sony Ericsson phones, but it believes it could do a lot better if operators can be persuaded to let users out of their walled gardens.

What's in it for the operators ?
In exchange for giving up their walled gardens, the operators get the promise of a cheaper handset platform, and one which will develop faster and have more applications — if the Android ecosystem works as planned.

Has anyone put Linux on a mobile phone before ?
Plenty of people have tried, and anyone wanting to sneer at Android's chances only has to point to the numbers of Linux phone alliances that have been tried before.

In fact, Linux phones are quite successful in the Far East, where they have a respectable market share in smartphones, and ship in volumes comparable to that of Windows Mobile. Both those operating systems pale beside the market share of Symbian however, which provides an open platform, which anyone can develop to, albeit one that the operators have to pay a licence fee for.

What's been the problem with mobile Linux ?
It's been difficult to persuade the diverse Linux community to create the kind of single monolithic software that a phone needs, then to persuade operators to use it and developers to build to it, and finally users to buy it.

With 34 members, including significant operators (Telefonica O2 and T-Mobile, and KDDI and DoCoMo in Asia) Android is already doing far better than any previous Linux phone effort.

Will Android phones be useful in business ?
They'll be as useful as any other smartphone. Like all significant phone developments, and most web developments at present, Android is aimed squarely at consumers. That's where there is money, and individuals with the freedom to spend it.

Businesses are too conservative to adopt Android quickly, and may well be scared of it initially if they perceive its openness as increasing the risk of malware.

Will Android succeed ?
Google announced the Android platform along with other members of the Open Handset Alliance, a group of 34 hardware and software companies plus wireless carriers committed to creating open standards for mobile devices.

To succeed, it has to get a large market share, persuading operators to actually deliver handsets and significant numbers of users to adopt it. Google says that three billion people have mobile phones, compared with the billion on the internet — but the majority of those phones are low-end feature phones that won't be able to benefit from Android. Most of the users are on pre-pay rather than a contract, so they won't be able to benefit from the high-value, identity-related services that might be offered on top of Android.

Another problem is that phone screens are smaller, so it may be physically difficult for Google to squeeze enough ads in without annoying the users.

Openness may count in its favour, but the success of the iPhone may well demonstrate that users generally don't care about openness, as long as there's a convincing advertising campaign.

Cleaning Your Computer

What a lot of computer owners don’t realize is how important it is to keep your computer clean. Cleaning your computer is almost all the time considered not to be a priority of any computer owner. Why? I have to believe that it’s lack of knowledge. In other words not a full understanding what the fuse is all about.

A computer is a very delicate piece of equipment. The computer works hard to entertain you, and serve your bidding. While your computer is doing all this it is running or is turned on. When the computer is on, all the components inside of the computer are working causing the computer to get hot. Depending on what you are doing on your computer at any given time, will in a lot of cases depend on how hot the computer will get.

Cooling is a very important part of your computer system. If your computer gets to hot things start to happen, bad things. Things that you don’t really don’t want going on inside your computer. In other words computer components will brake or burnt out. This will render them useless. Meaning they will have to be replaced.

The biggest cooling threat to all computers is dust. When a computer is on the components inside the computer are electrically charged. It’s the electrically charged components that attract the dust in side of your computer. What happens when you leave the dust unattended in side your computer? It will build up on the computer components, and especially the computer processor heat sink. When the dust builds up on the computer components, they can no longer breathe or circulate the much needed cooler air that allows computer components to cool down. If your computer components can not cool down they will simply break down.

You should try and get the most you can out of your computer. You can increase your chances of achieving that goal with a simple cleaning. I recommend a good cleaning at least once a month. This would also depend on your environment. The reason why I recommend cleaning the inside of the computer once a month is that it makes the cleaning job easier by decreasing the dust build up inside the computer.

1) Start a blog on your favorite topic, else you will always run out of content.

2) First write down 10 blog posts off-line and see how you are doing. If you find difficulty to write enough content on that topic, then try to write on some other topic. The best think to do is, first read some blogs on that particular topic. Do some research, search for blogs on that topic and see what others are doing. Then don't just copy other blogs, but understand that topic properly. After that you will find it easy to write more on that particular topic.

3) Choose a blogging platform. For blogs I always prefer wordpress, a self-hosted wordpress is the best option for blogging. This is a blog running on wordpress.

4) Don't start a blog with one or two entries. At-least make 10 posts on the blog's launch day. A blog with some decent content always makes a good impression. If you do this, then you will have nice readers from the first day of the launch.

5) Content is king, so make nice content. Check for grammatical and spellings errors off line, before publishing the blog. Good content brings natural links, so it is always advised to write properly. If you are not good at writing, then hire a writer. Pay someone who writes well.

6) The next step is to add the feeds. Check out feed burner and get your feeds running. You can see on the left sidebars, I have the feed subscription buttons placed there.

7) Try the blog top sites. This is a good way to show the world how popular your blog is. This also brings some traffic. Check out my blogs ranks on the top sites, the ranks are visible on the sidebar.

8) Promote your blog with the power of social bookmarking. To start with, join technorati, it's a blog search engine, and it is huge. Then try del.icio.us it is another social bookmarking website which gives a lot of traffic. There are a few more like this, digg, stumbleupon, reddit etc, I will make another post for this topic, let's not get too deep into this here.

9) Frequently visit blogs of your niche, even subscribe to it. When ever you see a new post, read it properly and give a good comment on it. Don't post spam comments; make a nice comment that gets accepted. Some blogs are no-follow and some are not. But remember the no-follow is only for Google and there is msn and yahoo also for the search. This step can help you get a lot of targeted readers apart from the link popularity. You can even give blogroll links to a few of the good blogs that you regularly visit.

10) Try to post regularly, if you don't post for sometime long, then you will lose a lot of subscription and regular readers. Blogging is a passion, don't just blog for the shake of it.

Blog For Money and Success
Making $100 a day from your blog is really easy. In fact, you should feel very dumb if you're not.

A successful person makes reasonable goals and achieves them.
If you want to be successful in anything you have to make short-term and long-term goals. The same thing goes for making money from your blog. You have to force yourself to create the goals and do everything you can to achieve them. Sometimes, that might mean staying up an extra few hours at night or even missing sleep entirely.

A list of reasonable daily blog goals (you can decide how many days a week)
By the end of today I will have……

1. Written at least two blog posts

2. Responded to all comments left on my blog

3. Visited the websites of the people who left comments on my blog and will have posted a comment on theirs.

4. Visited other blogs in my niche, will have left appropriate comments and will have built a relationship.

5. Started an email relationship with at least one other blogger.

6. Met my monetary goal for the day

7. Found a way to add at least 10 subscribers to my newsletter list. (This is a very important step if you are going to leave stage 1)

8. Found some way to get at least 1 – 2 backlinks to my site.

Reasonable daily monetary goals
In the beginning it is reasonable to set a low monetary goal. But as time goes by, $100 a day is not hard at all. Below I am going to list the different stages of monetization.

Stage 1: Between $1 - $5 a day
Most of your money is going to be made through pay-per-click (PPC) advertising. This would include programs such as Adsense and AuctionAds.

Stage 2: Between $5 - $20 a day
At this point, you should be consistently making a few dollars a day from advertising programs on your blog. If you are following the above daily steps, you should have a consistent readership of your blog. This means that your Alexa ranking and your Search Engine rankings are getting you to a point where you can start to get paid to write reviews of products or websites.

There are a few ways to get money by doing reviews. The easiest way is to post in forums a lot and use a signature. Your signature can say something like “I will review your site on my blog, PM for details.

When you first start doing reviews, you might have to do a few for free. Then you can start charging $5 - $10 per review. If your customer is satisfied, they will probably pay you to review their other websites. (In the beginning it might be worthwhile to exchange reviews).

Stage 3: Between $20 - $50 a day
By this time, your Alexa ranking should be 100,000 or lower and your Google PR should be at 5. If this is true about your site, you can start charging people for putting links on your site. A link on a PR5 site should run about $5/month. A review on a high traffic blog can cost anywhere from $10 - $20 Your blog is also at a stage where you can start selling banner ads.

In stage 3 you are going to have a pretty good following. This is a following that is now starting to trust you. This is a good time to start promoting affiliate programs. As long as the affiliate programs you are promoting are in your niche, you should be making a lot of money. Don’t forget to advertise your affiliates in your newsletter.

Stage 4: Between $50 - $100 a day
You have probably been following the above steps for at least 7 months to a year. Your Google PR is at 6, your Alexa ranking is lower than 50,000 and you are ranking pretty high on some keywords in the search engines.

In stage 4 you are making decent money. You have become a professional blogger and a trusted member of your community. You are ready to create an ebook on how you make $50 - $100 a day. At this point, people are ready to pay you for consultations and will definitely pay you more money for reviews and advertising space.

It is time to write information products on “tips and secrets” in your niche.

Stage 5: $100 and over a day
You are now almost a Guru in your field. You have finished your information products and have submitted them to affiliate sites like Clickbank. You now have people selling your products for you and visiting your blog on a daily basis.

Because of your success medium size websites and podcasters want to interview you. You are on your way to being able to quit your day job. You are ready to start other blogs and start making a “killing”.

Your Short-Term Goals
Your short-term goals are the 5 stages I listed above. Once you have reached a particular stage, you need to write in the exact date you expect to reach the next stage. Not only do you have to write the date, you have to achieve the goal by that date.

Creating profitable niche blogs are now widely used by online marketers as a way to promote their online businesses. Niche marketing has long been hailed by small-time affiliates and even gurus as the way to profit. Undiscovered niches offer little competition and are easier to conquer and definitely ideal for everyone. This article offers some quick steps to creating a profitable niche blog within one day. Imagine how many of such sites can you create in a month and how much you can profit from that!

Step 1 – Finding a Good Niche and Products
Brainstorm a few ideas, and dig deep into each of the ideas with keyword research tools like Overture, WordTracker and NicheBot Classic. Your goal is to find one with decent number of searches ie there must be sufficient demand.

Target one with a search count above 300 at Overture. Once you find some of these ideas, head to do an allintitle search at Google. Type “allintitle: yourkeyword” into the search box and start it rolling. If the number of search results is lower than 500 to 700, then you have hit the jackpot. We have found our target niche.

Next, it is time to search for a product to promote as an affiliate. If you already have a product with private label rights or resell rights collecting dusk in your hard drive, you may sell these on your blog. Otherwise, head to the affiliate marketplaces like ClickBank, Commission Junction and so on. Another quick tip is to Google “yourniche + affiliate program” to find a suitable affiliate product to promote.

Step 2 – Choosing a Blogging Platform
There are dozens of blogs you can use, but I would advise you to use either Blogger or WordPress. Both have its advantages. Blogger is very simple to use and ideal for first time bloggers. Set up does not take you more than 1 hour and you have a blog ready to go. But do not expect too many features. WordPress on the other hand can offer you a lot more features and there are powerful plug-ins you can find online quite easily.

Name your blog after the target keyword to aim well in the search engines. For example, if your niche keyword is “how to create a blog”, then name your blog as howtocreateablog.blogspot.com.

Use nice graphics from some of the free graphics depositories or stock photo sites like Stock Vault, Every Stock Photo, PublicDomain Photos and so on to decorate your niche blog. If your affiliate program provides great looking banners or book covers, use them!

Step 3 – Creating Content for your Niche Blog
You need good unique content for your blog. Go to Google and search. Take notes at the top 10 websites listed in the search results. Look for at least 6 useful key points.

Now, split the 3 key points into 2. Use each group of 3 to create a single blog post in your own words. Each blog post should contain at least 150 to 200 words and contain the affiliate link to your product. Weave the links into your content so that it looks natural. Ok, now you have your posts ready.

Post the first post to your blog, an introduction post so it may start like “Hello and welcome to my ……blah blah”. Post the subsequent 2 posts at 4 to 5 hour intervals.

Step 4 – Promote Your Blog!
You are now ready to drive tons of traffic to your niche blog! Now, after each post you put on your blog, ping it at Pingomatic. This will announce it to the search engines to visit your site.

You want to also bookmark your posts at the top social bookmarking sites such as Del.icio.us, Stumbleupon, Digg and so on.

Do not forget to find a few blogs related to your niche through Google and start commenting on some of their posts. Target those with a high Page Rank and ranking well in the search engines. Also do the same at related forums.

Finally, write an article and post it to GoArticles and EzineArticles. And wait for targeted traffic and sales to start rolling from Day One. Repeat the traffic driving techniques at least once a week and your Page Rank and sales will grow!

These are the exact steps needed to take your blog from ground zero to becoming a potential automatic money machine that keeps sending you income. For more tips on how I churn out dozens of such machines within 5 minutes per niche blog, check out my secret weapon.

Eight Steps to Writing an Outstanding Podcast

Podcasts are on the cutting edge of business communication, allowing you to speak with your own voice directly to your audience. They add variety to your blog or website and prove that you know how to stay ahead of the pack.

But hitting "record" without putting some thought into what you're going to say and how you're going to say it is a fatal mistake. Here are eight steps to follow for creating a podcast that makes your listener want to come back for more.

1. Choose a theme. Pick an issue about which you feel confident speaking. Try to narrow it down to a particular angle or perspective-think news clip, not university lecture. The best podcasts touch on a specific subject and cover it in depth, rather than attempting to discuss the history of Western Europe in three minutes or less.

2. Consider your audience. How much does your audience know about your subject? What style of reporting will connect with them? The more you put yourself in your listeners' shoes, the better you will be able to speak directly to them. Be sure to include a response to any previous questions or suggestions-your audience doesn't want to feel ignored.

3. Prepare an outline. Expand on your theme by coming up with four or five main elements or topics to discuss. Put the most important and engaging information first; this will hook your listener and entice them to hear out the rest of it. Even if you don't write your script word for word, an outline will help you organize your thoughts into a tidy framework.

4. Think ahead for interviews. If you want to include an interview in your podcast, it's a good idea to plan ahead. Make a list of questions you want to ask for sure, but remember that sometimes the best sound bites happen off-the-cuff. Feel comfortable enough with your interviewee to ask follow-up questions and allow the conversation to travel somewhere more interesting if the opportunity arises.

5. Use simple sentences and language. Keep the tone natural and conversational, as if you are speaking with a listener face-to-face-just as you would for any business writing. Toss any words that would send someone reaching for the dictionary; likewise, avoid long sub-clauses and complex syntax (these things only bury the point). Just because your sentences are short and clear does not mean your language has to be dry. Do not be afraid to use sensory descriptions to put your listener right in the heart of the action.

6. Keep it succinct. The length of your podcast depends on your subject and audience-but no matter how much information you feel is absolutely crucial to your point, listeners will lose interest if it drags. No footnotes or unnecessary diversions here; just the facts, ma'am.

7. Do a practice run. This is especially important if you're working from a basic outline. Read the script for a friend or family member for their (honest!) feedback, or record yourself once and listen to it. Be on the lookout for awkward pauses, confusing sections, and stumbling points. Make notes and do another few run-throughs with the changes incorporated.

8. Print it out. It's much easier to read from a piece of paper than from a computer screen, so print out your script before you record. Enlarging the font helps too. If you're worried about losing your place during recording, highlight a few key words or mark the beginning of different sections to keep you on track.

The more thoroughly you prepare your script, the more confident you will be when it comes down to recording it-and the more effective your podcast will be because of it.

Blogging for Fun and Profit
A blog is an online version of diary where people write and display almost anything - their opinions, photos, jokes, thoughts for the day and more. People also share stories about their pets, their passion for soccer, stamps... the limit is only your imagination!

In the last few years, blogging has emerged to become a much more meaningful activity than simply maintaining a personal diary. People use it to advertise their products and services, in fact, quite a number of companies even create their online presence by using a blog instead of a website.

Create Your Own Blog
Starting a blog is free. You can create one at http://www.blogger.com - a free service from Google Inc. You don't need to register a domain name or buy hosting. When you sign up at Blogger, everything happens online. Your blog will be hosted by Blogger and you get an URL like http://yourdomain.blogspot.com. You simply log in to your account and start to write. This is much easier and cheaper than buying your own domain and hosting, then hiring someone to do the web design, writing and coding.

Another free blogging service available online is WordPress which is also very popular and easy to use. WordPress supports more features than Blogger while allowing you to customize your blog with various plug-in. You can check it out at http://wordpress.org.

Monetize Your Blog
While blogging for your own interest, you can in fact maximize the potential of your blog for many marketing or commercial purposes.

The quickest and easiest way to turn a blog into a money-making enterprise is to include advertising on your blog. This can be done with contextual ad programs like Adsense - an advertising program by Google. Basically, you get paid when people click on the ads displayed on your website or blog. Google Adsense program is free to sign up. You can visit http://www.google.com/adsense to learn more about the rules and guidelines of the program. Other Adsense type ads that you can use for blog monetizing are AdBrite and Widgetbucks

Affiliate program is another potential way to make money blogging. By focusing on the subject of your blog post, you can promote relevant products from cost per sale affiliate programs like ClickBank and Amazon. You can write a review about the product or service with your affiliate links embedded inside so you get the commission whenever a sale is made.
